Join The Marathon

Marathon Monday Monday, April 15th is Patriots’ Day in Massachusetts, and is also the day runners from all over the world compete in the famed Boston Marathon. As advocates for gun safety, we are also running our own marathon to bring awareness gun related issues and legislative change. This Monday the 15th, greater Boston area NAA representatives will be engaging spectators along the Boston marathon route, to circulate our message by passing out flyers, pins and stickers. They are also planning to gather at least 200 signatures for letters that have been drafted, urging Governor Patrick to help bring about needed change in Massachusetts. What a terrific way to extend the Newtown Action Alliance message beyond Connecticut.

The letters are as follows:

The Office of Governor Deval Patrick
Massachusetts State House
Room 280
Boston, MA 02133

Dear Governor Patrick,

I am writing to you today to ask for your support of Bills S.1126, S.1120, S.1116 and H.3253 proposed by Senator Creem, Senator Chang-Diaz and Representative Linsky. These Acts propose comprehensive gun violence prevention legislation and are respectful of the Second Amendment. They do not affect the ownership of rifles and shotguns commonly used for hunting and they do not require the confiscation of any type of weapons.  These important Acts address:

-  Universal background checks for all gun purchases, including private sales

-  A strengthened background check system

-  A suitability standard for all gun licenses, with discretion for local licensing authorities

-  Prohibition of military assault weapons and high-capacity magazine clips

-  Stronger penalties for gun-related crime, including failure to report lost and stolen guns and trafficking of firearms

Like millions of Americans from across the country, I believe more has to be done to reduce the daily tragedy of gun violence and deaths.  I believe that these laws will be effective at stemming the growing problem of gun violence in the Commonwealth and make Massachusetts a safer place to live and raise our families.

I urge you to join me in supporting these acts of legislation as well as other common sense solutions to the increasing problem of gun violence in our State.

Sincerely,
